Francis Jones translates poetry – mainly from Dutch and Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian into English, though he has also translated from Caribbean creoles, Russian and Hungarian, and into Northern English dialects. This has won him fourteen poetry translation prizes in the UK, USA, the Netherlands and Bosnia. Francis Jones is also Professor of Translation Studies at the School of Modern Languages, Newcastle University. Here he teaches on translator and interpreter training MAs. He researches all aspects of poetry translation, ranging from translators’ working strategies to how poetry translation can promote political views. Right now he is working on ‘PoetTrios’, an inter-university research project looking at how Dutch and British poets translate each other’s poems with the help of bilingual language advisors.
