Welcome to the fourth annual Newcastle Poetry Festival and our most ambitious programme yet. In a socio-political age increasingly marked by division, we’ve been considering the fundamental question of what connects us, and our programme reflects responses which are diverse, complex and inspiring.

Join us for a four-day celebration of the finest poetry from around the world by some of the art’s most acclaimed practitioners, involving readings, lectures, discussions, workshops, and multi-genre performances (music, painting, film), with the theme of crossings – between countries, languages, and art forms – at its heart.

The festival itself crosses between various venues around Newcastle, including Sage Gateshead and Northern Stage, so please do check our programme carefully for full details of location and ticketing.

We look forward to meeting you!

Poets respond to the art of Sean Scully

The Newcastle Poetry Festival 2018 coincides with a major retrospective of the artist Sean Scully, co-hosted by the Hatton and Laing Art Galleries. As part of the 2018 Newcastle Poetry Festival, eight poets have been commissioned to respond to eight paintings exhibited in the galleries between February and May 2018. The Crossings app allows visitors to the galleries to read and hear the poems while standing in front of the art that inspired them. The app will be available from the Apple App Store and Google Play from the launch of this year’s Festival until the exhibitions close at the end of May.
